PROMOTE APPLAUDS THE GOVERNMENT’S

REVERSAL ON MOT TEST FREQUENCY

Pro-MOTe, the lobby group set up last year to campaign for the maintenance of annual MOTs, has welcomed today’s announcement that Ministers have dropped plans to reduce testing frequency.

In a written ministerial statement this morning, Transport secretary Justine Greening announced:

“Having listened closely to the very many views put forward and considered the available evidence, I have decided that I am not going to carry out further work in relation to relaxing the first test date or the frequency of testing.”

The campaign – supported by more than 30 organisations representing motoring organisations like the AA and RAC, road safety campaigners, cyclists, the garage trade and the insurance industry – argued that by moving to testing every other year would be:

•          DANGEROUS – resulting in an increase in deaths and serious injuries in British roads

•          EXPENSIVE – costing motorists more in repair and insurance costs, and risking up to 50,000 jobs in the motor industry

•          UNWANTED – opposed by drivers themselves

Commenting Bill Duffy, Coordinator of Pro-MOTe and CEO of Halford Autocentres said:

“Reducing the frequency of MOTs would have been dangerous, expensive and unwanted, and we welcome the Government’s sensible decision today to drop the idea. Ministers

“The proposal to reduce MOT frequency was opposed by organisations across the board, from industry to road safety campaigners to insurance companies and others.  Their support for Pro-MOTe and its objective was a major factor in persuading Ministers that the maintenance of annual MOTs was the right way forward.

“We look forward to working with Government on how to make the MOT test better and to ensure consumers receive the best customer service.”

Remapping – Improve The Performance Of Your Car for Just £299*

The extreme cold can be as brutally harsh on your car as they feel to you. Batteries are compromised, antifreeze is challenged and oil viscosity is altered in extreme conditions. Factor in that any components that may already be affected before the cold weather settled, and you may have some issues.  It’s always advisable to have a thorough preseason checkup performed on your car before the impending days of winter come barreling in.

◦    The battery is the first component called upon to start the vehicle. It needs to supply 100-200 amps in order to turn the starter against the flywheel and crank engine over. Batteries for your car will often produce twice or two-and-a-half times more cold cranking amps than is required to start the engine. The problem is, during extreme temperatures, the amperage capacity of the battery can be dwindled to half its output. In addition, if the vehicle is parked outside in inclement weather, the flywheel and starter wheel can become frozen. Although it would most likely turn under the correct amperage from the battery, a compromised battery will be ineffectual.
◦    Keeping condensation from the fuel and fuel lines is another reason why cars won’t start in winter months. A full tank of gas can produce one pint of condensation inside the fuel tank. Once the fuel lines shut down after the engine stops, condensation can begin to form inside the fuel lines. If they reach the throttle before the actual fuel, the vehicle will not be able to turn over. Considering the compromised position that a new battery is under during extreme cold, it doesn’t take long for an engine that won’t turn over to suck the existing amperage from a battery and then compound the problem. In addition, the starter heats up very quickly and continuously trying to turn a stubborn engine over could easily damage the starter.
◦    Although coolant and oil are important no matter what time of year it is, and even though neither one will have an effect on if your vehicle will start or not, they are essential in extreme conditions. Thinner weight oil will help prevent coagulation of the oil properties which will help move the oil into the engine once started. Coolant in the engine block should be properly mixed–not too concentrate and not too lean–in order to ensure the correct temperature and pH balance. Because of the extreme differences between a cold engine and a running engine, it doesn’t take long for a cold engine to heat up. If the temperature of the antifreeze is not correct, you can crack your engine block.
